Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps
Description
This recipe prepares a savory ground turkey filling cooked with yellow onions, garlic, and a blend of chili powder, cumin, and paprika for warmth and depth of flavor. The addition of tomato sauce and chicken broth simmers down to create a slightly thick and saucy filling. The turkey is cooked until fully done, allowing the spices to infuse well.
The filling is served spooned over doubled-up iceberg or romaine lettuce leaves, which substitute for tortillas to reduce carbs and add a fresh crunch. Toppings such as diced tomatoes, red onion, avocado, cilantro, shredded Mexican cheese, and light sour cream can be added to customize each wrap's flavor and texture. This approach makes for a vibrant, handheld meal with a pleasing contrast between seasoned meat and crisp lettuce.
Adaptations include substituting ground chicken for turkey and adjusting spice level with hot sauce or extra chili powder as desired. Lettuce type can be varied between iceberg or romaine based on preference or availability. The filling can be prepared ahead and refrigerated or frozen without toppings, which should be added fresh at serving.

Notes
- The filling recipe is adapted from Cooks Illustrated and can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator or freezer, excluding toppings.
- Ground chicken may be used instead of turkey as a substitute.
- Increase heat by adding hot sauce, extra chili powder, or red pepper flakes as desired.
- If romaine lettuce is unavailable, iceberg lettuce works well as an alternative.
- Toppings such as cheese, tomatoes, onion, avocado, cilantro, and sour cream are optional and not included in nutritional estimates.
