Vegan Pizza Rolls

These Vegan Pizza Rolls are homemade dough pockets filled with marinara sauce, vegan cheese, and veggies like mushrooms, olives, and fresh basil. The dough is made from yeast, flour, and olive oil, kneaded and allowed to rise before rolling out and adding toppings. Once rolled and baked, they create a handheld snack or meal component that balances a soft, chewy crust with savory, melty vegan fillings, suitable for a vegan diet.

Ingredients

  • 1 active dry yeast 25-ounce) packet
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup water warm
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 jar marinara sauce or pizza sauce
  • basil chopped, sliced, sliced, etc
  • mushrooms
  • black olives
  • vegan cheese

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. In a bowl, add the yeast and sugar to the warm water and mix until the ingredients dissolve. Water should be lukewarm. If you have a food thermometer, it should be about 105 degrees F. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until a foamy surface appears, letting you know the yeast is activated.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the olive oil and yeast mixture and stir until thoroughly combined and a dough forms, about 1 or 2 minutes.
  3. Turn the mixture onto a floured surface and knead until it becomes smooth, about 7 minutes or so. Roll it into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl, making sure to lightly coat the whole ball with the oil. Cover and let sit for 1 hour, allowing the dough to rise.
  4. In the meantime, prepare your toppings and preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  5. After an hour, turn the dough out onto a surface and roll out flat into a rectangle. Add sauce and toppings. I would recommend putting the toppings in separate rows and leaving lots of breathing room near the top.
  6. Roll the dough, from the bottom to the top, into a tube. Using a sharp knife, cut out slices about 1' or so thick.
  7. Gently and carefully transfer them to a non-stick baking sheet or a baking sheet covered in parchment paper. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown. Remove and allow to cool a little before serving.

Notes

  • Use a lukewarm water temperature around 105°F to activate yeast effectively for the dough rise.
  • Daiya is recommended for vegan cheese because it melts well, contributing to a better texture inside the rolls.
  • For a quicker approach, you can use store-bought vegan pizza dough instead of making your own.
  • When filling the dough, arrange toppings in separate rows and leave breathing room near the top for easier rolling and even cooking.
