Vegan Pizza Rolls
Description
Vegan Pizza Rolls combine a fresh yeast dough with classic pizza flavors adapted for a vegan diet. The dough rises for an hour after kneading, ensuring a tender, risen crust. The filling ingredients include marinara sauce, basil, mushrooms, black olives, and vegan cheese, layered before rolling the dough into individual rolls. With baking at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, these rolls develop a golden exterior with a melty interior from the vegan cheese and sauce.
The mixture of veggies and vegan cheese inside creates a moist and satisfying filling while the dough provides a chewy, slightly crisp texture on the outside. These pizza rolls can be sliced for sharing or enjoyed individually as a convenient finger food for meals or snacks.
The recipe notes suggest using Daiya vegan cheese for better melt quality and recommend maintaining the water temperature around 105°F to activate the yeast properly. For quicker preparation, store-bought vegan pizza dough can replace homemade dough. Shaping the rolls by arranging toppings in rows inside the dough before rolling helps in portioning and baking.
Ingredients
- 1 active dry yeast 25-ounce) packet
- 1 Tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup water warm
- 3 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 1 jar marinara sauce or pizza sauce
- basil chopped, sliced, sliced, etc
- mushrooms
- black olives
- vegan cheese
Instructions
- In a bowl, add the yeast and sugar to the warm water and mix until the ingredients dissolve. Water should be lukewarm. If you have a food thermometer, it should be about 105 degrees F. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until a foamy surface appears, letting you know the yeast is activated.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the olive oil and yeast mixture and stir until thoroughly combined and a dough forms, about 1 or 2 minutes.
- Turn the mixture onto a floured surface and knead until it becomes smooth, about 7 minutes or so. Roll it into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl, making sure to lightly coat the whole ball with the oil. Cover and let sit for 1 hour, allowing the dough to rise.
- In the meantime, prepare your toppings and preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- After an hour, turn the dough out onto a surface and roll out flat into a rectangle. Add sauce and toppings. I would recommend putting the toppings in separate rows and leaving lots of breathing room near the top.
- Roll the dough, from the bottom to the top, into a tube. Using a sharp knife, cut out slices about 1' or so thick.
- Gently and carefully transfer them to a non-stick baking sheet or a baking sheet covered in parchment paper. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown. Remove and allow to cool a little before serving.
Notes
- Use a lukewarm water temperature around 105°F to activate yeast effectively for the dough rise.
- Daiya is recommended for vegan cheese because it melts well, contributing to a better texture inside the rolls.
- For a quicker approach, you can use store-bought vegan pizza dough instead of making your own.
- When filling the dough, arrange toppings in separate rows and leave breathing room near the top for easier rolling and even cooking.
