Whipped Homemade Shea Butter Lotion

This Homemade Shea Butter Lotion Recipe is so easy and luxurious and non greasy! Great for body and face and can be used for aging and acne prone skin too!

Servings: 10 ounces

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shea butter
  • 1/4 cup carrier oil I use a combination of Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, and Plum Kernel Oil.
  • 5-10 drops essential oil Roman Chamomile. Carrot Seed Oil and Lavender all have skin nourishing properties and are great choices.
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot (or cornstarch or tapioca starch. Optional ,but recommended to make a non-greasy lotion.)
  • 4-6 drops Vitamin E optional, but recommended for antioxidant and preservative benefits

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Place shea butter in the top of a double boiler. You can also place it in a regular saucepan, but you'll want to be especially careful not to burn the shea butter.
  2. Melt the shea butter over low heat. Remove from heat when melted.
  3. Add the arrowroot (if using) to the carrier oil in a small bowl. Mix well.
  4. Add the carrier oil mixture to the shea butter.
  5. Place the mixture in the fridge and allow it to solidify some (about 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on fridge temperature and where you place the container). Alternatively you can chill in the freezer for faster results. This will allow the mixture to be able to be whipped more quickly and will prevent graininess.
  6. Whip the shea butter and oils with a hand or stand mixer. Stop when you have your desired consistency. This should take at least several minutes.
  7. Add essential oil before placing the homemade shea butter lotion in containers. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Make sure to use the arrowroot to prevent a greasy lotion.
  • Chilling the lotion after adding the carrier oil will speed the recipe along and will result in a non-grainy lotion.
