Whiskey BBQ Sauce From Scratch
This homemade whiskey BBQ sauce combines whiskey, garlic, onion, ketchup, tomato paste, and vinegar with Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and liquid smoke to create a tangy, slightly sweet barbecue sauce with smoky undertones. Simmering the ingredients melds the flavors and thickens the sauce, which can be strained for smoothness or used with its rustic texture. It enriches grilled or smoked meats with a deep, complex flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 cup whiskey
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 1/2 onion minced
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper fresh ground
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups ketchup
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 1/3 cup vinegar
- 1 tablespoon liquid smoke
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1/3 cup brown sugar packed
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce optional
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the onion, garlic, and whiskey. Simmer together for 7-10 minutes until the onion is translucent. Mix in the ground black pepper, salt, ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire, brown sugar, tomato paste, liquid smoke, and hot sauce.
- Bring everything to a boil and then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 20 minutes.
- Run sauce through a strainer if you want to remove the onion and garlic for a smoother sauce, otherwise, transfer to jars and let cool. Refrigerate for at least overnight to allow flavors to develop.
- Enjoy!
