Whiskey BBQ Sauce From Scratch

This homemade whiskey BBQ sauce combines whiskey, garlic, onion, ketchup, tomato paste, and vinegar with Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and liquid smoke to create a tangy, slightly sweet barbecue sauce with smoky undertones. Simmering the ingredients melds the flavors and thickens the sauce, which can be strained for smoothness or used with its rustic texture. It enriches grilled or smoked meats with a deep, complex flavor.

Description

The Whiskey BBQ Sauce From Scratch is prepared by simmering whiskey with minced garlic and onions until translucent, infusing the sauce base with a pronounced savory and spirited note. The addition of ketchup, tomato paste, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and liquid smoke balances acidity, sweetness, and smokiness, creating a multifaceted sauce.

After mixing all ingredients, the sauce is brought to a boil then reduced to simmer until thickened slightly, allowing flavors to concentrate. Straining is optional, depending on whether a smooth or textured consistency is preferred. The resulting sauce has a well-rounded flavor profile, featuring tangy ketchup and vinegar balanced by sweetness and smoky accents from liquid smoke and whiskey.

This BBQ sauce pairs well with grilled or smoked meats, adding both moisture and rich flavor. It needs to be refrigerated overnight or longer to fully develop its taste. The recipe also allows hot sauce for heat, which can be adjusted to personal preference.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup whiskey
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 onion minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper fresh ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/3 cup vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon liquid smoke
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce optional

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the onion, garlic, and whiskey. Simmer together for 7-10 minutes until the onion is translucent. Mix in the ground black pepper, salt, ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire, brown sugar, tomato paste, liquid smoke, and hot sauce.
  2. Bring everything to a boil and then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 20 minutes.
  3. Run sauce through a strainer if you want to remove the onion and garlic for a smoother sauce, otherwise, transfer to jars and let cool. Refrigerate for at least overnight to allow flavors to develop.
  4. Enjoy!
