Whole Wheat Apple Spice Waffles

Whole Wheat Apple Spice Waffles incorporate grated apple into whole wheat waffle batter, flavored with apple pie spice and cinnamon. Accompanied by a sweet and spiced sautéed apple topping made from sliced apples, brown sugar, and apple spice, these waffles offer a tender interior and a warmly spiced fruit accent. The batter combines buttermilk, eggs, butter, and leavening agents for traditional waffle texture and rise.

Description

The waffle batter for Whole Wheat Apple Spice Waffles blends whole wheat flour with baking soda, baking powder, salt, sugar, and a mix of apple pie spices to impart warm autumnal flavors. The wet ingredients include beaten eggs, melted butter, and buttermilk, the latter providing moisture and a slight tang. Grated apple folds into the batter, adding moisture and subtle fruit sweetness.

Waffles are cooked according to the waffle iron manufacturer's instructions, yielding a golden-brown exterior with a tender and slightly dense crumb featuring bursts of apple flavor. The apple topping, prepared separately by sautéing sliced apples in butter with apple spice, cinnamon, and brown sugar, adds a soft, sweet, and spiced contrast. A small amount of water is added to create a syrupy consistency to drizzle over the waffles, which are suited to breakfast or brunch.

This recipe yields enough apple topping for about four servings, offering a balanced sweetness to complement the whole wheat waffles. The flavored butter coating the fruit enhances the overall aroma and taste, making the dish satisfying without heavy syrups. They can be served with additional maple syrup if desired.
