Baked orange doughnuts with cinnamon sugar

Baked orange doughnuts are light and soft with a subtle citrus zest complemented by a coating of cinnamon sugar. The buttermilk and melted butter in the batter ensure moistness, while baking provides a tender texture without frying. After baking, the doughnuts are dipped in melted butter and rolled in cinnamon sugar for a sweet, aromatic finish suitable for breakfast or dessert.

Description

This recipe combines all-purpose flour, caster sugar, baking powder, and salt as the dry base, mixed with wet ingredients including buttermilk, egg, melted butter, orange juice, and zest. The batter is gently combined then spooned three-quarters full into doughnut tins. Baking at moderate oven temperatures produces doughnuts that are light and fluffy. After baking and cooling, the doughnuts are dipped in additional melted butter and coated generously with a cinnamon and granulated sugar mixture, adding a crisp, flavorful exterior. This method yields doughnuts with a soft crumb and citrus brightness balanced by the sweet-spiced finish.

The cinnamon sugar coating enhances the orange aroma and adds a textural contrast without deep frying. These doughnuts can be served warm or cooled and make a sweet treat for brunch or snacks.
