Notes
- Substitutions for the Original Recipe
- Milk - You can use reconstituted powdered milk, evaporated milk, chicken broth, water + broth concentrate, "other than" milk (almond, etc.- use the unsweetened variety) or any strength of cows milk.
- Cream of Mushroom Soup - Any variety of "cream of" soups or your homemade cream of mushroom soup.
- Soy Sauce - Braggs Liquid Aminos
- Canned Green Beans - Can use fresh or frozen green beans.
- French-Fried Onions - in the green bean mixture can use ½ cup sauteed onions and then for the toppings 1 Cup crushed cornflakes with 2 Tbs melted butter or any crunchy type topping like potato chips, gold fish crackers, bread crumbs, etc with butter.
- We are seeking to double the usual recipe, so be sure to use large size bowls and baking dish.
- You CAN make this in a slow cooker, but you will need a large 6-8 quart size.
- This is a great side dish for adding your own touch like fresh mushrooms (saute first), cheddar cheese or fresh green beans.
- You can substitute the classic onion topping with butter coated and crushed corn flakes!
- You can take the classic french's green bean casserole to the next level by adding a dash of Worcestershire sauce!
- Keep this traditional green bean casserole recipe oven ready in an airtight container!
- Plan your oven space for the big day! This casserole takes up half of a rack and if other items are in the oven, will take slightly longer cooking time.
- This dish tastes great at room temperature, be sure it gets to the refrigerator within 2 hours, however.
- Shop early! French fried onions keep on the shelf, buy those early at the grocery store (they sell out quickly).
- Add ¼ - ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper for a bit of spice.
