Blood Orange Shandy

Blood Orange Shandy is a refreshing beverage made by combining freshly squeezed blood orange juice and a homemade simple syrup with light pilsner or hefeweizen beer. Served over ice and garnished with blood orange slices and fresh mint, it offers a crisp, citrusy flavor with a mild sweetness balanced by the beer’s crispness. Preparing the syrup and juice ahead simplifies assembly, making it ideal for casual gatherings.

Description

The Blood Orange Shandy begins with preparing a simple syrup by simmering equal parts sugar and water until the sugar dissolves, then cooling the syrup. Freshly squeezed and strained blood orange juice is combined with the cooled syrup to create a sweet citrus base. This mixture is then divided among glasses filled with ice, topped with a light, carbonated pilsner or hefeweizen beer, and gently stirred to combine flavors without losing fizz.

The drink balances the tart and deep citrus flavor of blood oranges with beer’s light bitterness and subtle maltiness, enhanced by the sweetness of the syrup. Garnishes of sliced blood oranges and fresh mint leaves visually enhance and add a mild herbal note. Served chilled, this shandy provides a bright and refreshing taste experience.

This beverage fits well in warm weather or social settings where a lower-alcohol, fruity drink is desired. It can be prepared in parts ahead of time—the simple syrup up to a week ahead, and the juice up to three days—making it convenient for entertaining.
