British Baked Beans

These British Baked Beans combine cannellini beans simmered in a rich tomato sauce seasoned with smoked paprika, thyme, and optional Worcestershire sauce. The sauce includes tomato paste, maple syrup, and pureed tomatoes for a balance of sweetness and depth, cooked down to a thick consistency. The dish offers a comforting sauced bean entree that can be served warm as part of a breakfast or light meal.

Description

British Baked Beans feature cannellini beans cooked in a flavorful tomato-based sauce. The sauce starts with sautéed minced onion and garlic softened in olive oil, which builds a savory base. Tomato paste and pureed tomatoes add body and subtle sweetness balanced by maple syrup. Smoked paprika and dried thyme contribute smoky and herbal notes, while optional Worcestershire sauce adds complexity.

The beans simmer in this sauce until slightly thickened, creating a dish with tender beans enveloped in a bright, mildly smoky, and subtly sweet sauce. The seasoning with sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper adjusts the final flavor. This dish can be served warm alongside toast or as part of a larger meal.

Leftovers can be stored in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to three days or frozen for up to one month. Reheat gently before serving, ensuring the beans become heated through without losing texture.

  • sea salt freshly-cracked

  2. Add the tomato paste followed by the maple syrup, thyme, smoked paprika, vegan Worcestershire sauce (if using), and tomato passata, stir well and cook for a further 2 minutes.
  3. Add the beans into the saucepan and simmer all the ingredients for 8 minutes over low heat, stirring every now and then, until the sauce has slightly thickened.
  4. Season to taste with sea salt and freshly-cracked black-pepper to taste, stir gently, remove the pan from the heat and serve.

Notes

  • Store leftover baked beans in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • For longer storage, freeze portions for up to 1 month; thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
  • Reheat gently, stirring occasionally, until beans are hot throughout.
