Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • ¼ cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 500°F and lightly spray a 9-inch oven-safe skillet with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl add flour and shortening. Using a pastry cutter or clean hands, work the shortening into the flour until you have a fine crumb and very few lumps (about 5 minutes).
  3. Slowly drizzle buttermilk into the bowl while continuously mixing until just incorporated.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface.
  5. Use your hands to gently fold the dough over itself 3 or 4 times to create layers.
  6. Press the dough out until it reaches about ½-inch thickness.
  7. Use a 3-inch biscuit cutter to cut out 6-8 biscuits. We made 7 biscuits.
  8. Place biscuits in the greased skillet and bake for 16-18 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter and serve warm.
