Caramel Magic Cookies Bars
Description
Caramel Magic Cookie Bars begin with a base of graham cracker crumbs combined with melted butter pressed into a baking pan. Sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, shredded coconut, and chopped pecans are layered over the crust. A sauce made from melting caramel candies with cream is poured on top, followed by a second layer of sweetened condensed milk, coconut, chocolate chips, and nuts. The bars are baked until the top is golden and set.
The combination of creamy caramel, crunchy nuts, and chocolate creates a rich and textured dessert bar with sweet and buttery flavors. The coconut adds a slight chewiness and additional sweetness. Baking melds the layers together while forming a lightly crisp top layer.
Once cooled, the bars can be cut into squares or diamonds for serving. They store well at room temperature covered, making them convenient for snacking or sharing.
Using regular sweetened condensed milk is recommended over caramel-flavored condensed milk to maintain balanced caramel taste, as the actual melted caramel layer provides the main caramel flavor.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter melted
- 1 cups graham cracker crumbs and 1/2
- 1 oz sweetened condensed milk can
- 2 cups chocolate chips but milk works as well, I prefer dark or semi-sweet
- 1 cups coconut flakes and 1/3 flaked
- 1 cup pecan walnuts also work, chopped; dry roasted and salted or ideal
- 1 oz caramel candy pkg Kraft
- 2 TBSP cream heavy cream or even half and half will work
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees F (325 degrees for glass dish). Coat 13x9-inch baking pan with no-stick cooking spray or line with foil and then coat with non-stick cooking spray.
- Combine graham cracker crumbs and butter. Press into bottom of prepared pan. Pour half of sweetened condensed milk evenly over crumb mixture. Layer with half of the chocolate chips, coconut and nuts. Press down firmly with a fork.
- In a heavy sauce pan cook caramels and cream over medium heat until completely melted, stirring constantly. Once melted, carefully (it's hot!) pour over magic cookie bars. Follow with remaining sweetened condensed milk, coconut, chocolate chips and nuts.
- Bake 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool. Cut into bars or diamonds. Store covered at room temperature.
Notes
- Use regular sweetened condensed milk rather than caramel-flavored for better balance; the caramel layer itself delivers most of the caramel flavor.
- Grease the baking pan or line it with foil and spray to prevent sticking and simplify removal.
- Allow bars to cool fully before cutting to maintain clean edges and prevent crumbling.
