Caramelized Onion & Bacon Skillet Dip

This Caramelized Onion & Bacon Skillet Dip blends sweet slow-cooked onions and smoky bacon with melted gruyere cheese and creamy sour cream and mayonnaise. The dip bakes to a bubbly, golden finish, offering a rich and savory appetizer that pairs well with sliced French baguette for dipping.

Description

The recipe starts by softening diced sweet onions in butter over medium heat, seasoned with salt, pepper, and brown sugar to encourage caramelization over about 20-30 minutes. Adding beer or white wine to deglaze the pan intensifies the flavor and lifts browned bits. Mixing the caramelized onions with cooked diced bacon, shredded gruyere, sour cream, and mayonnaise creates a creamy, well-balanced base.

Spreading the mixture into a small skillet or baking dish and baking until golden and bubbly produces a warm, rich dip. Its combination of sweet onion notes, smoky bacon, and nutty cheese offers a layered flavor profile with a creamy texture contrasted by the crisp edges after baking.

Serving this dip warm alongside slices of French baguette makes for a satisfying snack or appetizer, ideal for sharing as a crowd-pleasing starter.
