Cardamom Coffee
Description
Cardamom Coffee is made by steeping ground coffee and cardamom pods in hot boiled water using a French press, yielding a richly spiced coffee base. The addition of maple syrup introduces a subtle sweetness that balances the slight bitterness of coffee and the bright, warm floral flavors from the cardamom. Incorporating milk softens the beverage, creating a smooth texture. An iced version is made by chilling the sweetened coffee and serving it over ice with milk for a refreshing alternative.
The coffee's flavor is greatly influenced by the fresh crushing of whole cardamom pods, which releases aromatic oils that infuse the brew with complexity. Brewing time is approximately six minutes, enough to extract a rich coffee profile without excessive bitterness, while stirring midway enhances the infusion. The resulting drink can be enjoyed plain, sweetened, hot, or cold depending on preference, offering versatility.
This cardamom coffee serves as an excellent morning or afternoon beverage, providing a distinctive spice twist that distinguishes it from regular coffee. It pairs well with light snacks or can be a comforting standalone drink. Preparing it ahead and refrigerating for up to five days allows convenient cold servings.
For the best flavor, use freshly ground coffee and whole cardamom pods that are crushed just before brewing. Add maple syrup when the coffee is still hot to ensure even sweetness. Stir in milk just before serving. For the iced version, chill the coffee thoroughly and serve over ice in a chilled glass to maintain coolness and freshness.
