Cherry Sauce

This Cherry Sauce blends canned or fresh cherries with sugar, lemon juice, butter, and a touch of almond extract to create a thickened fruit topping. The sauce is cooked gently, starting with a boil then simmering to soften fresh or frozen cherries when used. Cornstarch slurry is stirred in to thicken the sauce to a glossy finish. It can be served warm or cooled to room temperature for desserts or breakfast dishes.

Description

The Cherry Sauce recipe combines the natural sweetness and tartness of cherries with a smooth, slightly buttery texture enhanced by lemon juice and almond extract. Starting with cherries and their syrup or added water in a saucepan, sugar and butter provide richness and balance. Simmering fresh or frozen cherries softens them, but canned cherries require less cooking time. The addition of cornstarch dissolved in water thickens the sauce quickly, creating a glossy, pourable consistency. The almond extract added off heat lends a subtle, nutty aroma that complements the fruitiness. This versatile sauce pairs well with ice cream, pancakes, and simple cakes. It keeps refrigerated for up to a week, making it easy to prepare ahead for convenient use throughout the week.
