Cinnamon French Toast Bites

Cinnamon French Toast Bites are cubed, thick slices of slightly stale white bread dipped briefly in an egg mixture, pan-sautéed until golden, and coated in cinnamon sugar. Served with maple syrup, they offer a crispy exterior with a tender interior, making a fun and shareable breakfast or snack.

Description

To prepare Cinnamon French Toast Bites, thick-cut white bread slices have their crusts removed and are cut into uniform cubes. The cubes are quickly dipped in a lightly salted egg and milk mixture, avoiding excessive soaking to prevent sogginess. Then they are sautéed in butter over medium-high heat, turning to brown all sides evenly, creating a crisp exterior while maintaining softness inside.

After cooking, the warm cubes are tossed in cinnamon sugar, adding a sweet-spicy coating that complements the buttery bread. The finished bites pair naturally with maple syrup for dipping, making them ideal for casual morning meals. The recipe notes emphasize using slightly stale bread to maintain cube shape and reduce egg absorption, with thicker slices preferable for ideal texture and size.

This recipe yields enough for about three servings, suitable for small groups or families. Variations can include different bread types but may alter taste and texture, with grainy breads less preferred here.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 white bread 1"/2.5cm thick) (Note 1, thick slices of slightly stale
  • 2 egg or 3 small eggs, large
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 3 tbsp butter , separated
  • maple syrup not optional!, to serve

Instructions

  1. Cut the crust off the bread, then cut each piece into 9 equal cubes.
  2. Whisk the eggs, milk and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Combine sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  4. Melt 1 1/2 tbsp of butter in a fry pan over medium high heat. Don't let the butter brown.
  5. Quickly toss half the bread cubes in the egg mixture and use your hands to shake off excess egg mixture. Place the bread cubes in the fry pan and use a wooden spoon to "sauté" them until browned on all sides - about 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Remove the bread cubes from the fry pan straight into the sugar mixture. Toss to coat, then remove onto a plate.
  7. Repeat with remaining bread cubes.
  8. Serve immediately, with maple syrup for dipping.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale, thick-cut bread to prevent excessive egg absorption and help the cubes hold their shape during cooking.
  • The best bread for this recipe is a block-style loaf cut to about 1 inch thick before removing crusts.
  • Cinnamon French Toast Bites serve approximately three people, adjusting quantities accordingly.
