Dalgona Coffee (Korean Whipped Coffee)

Dalgona Coffee is a whipped coffee drink made by vigorously beating instant coffee, sugar, and hot water into a stiff, creamy foam, which is then spooned over milk served hot or cold with ice. The result is a layered drink with a light, frothy coffee topping and smooth milk base, providing a rich yet airy coffee experience.

Description

Dalgona Coffee is prepared by whipping equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water until the mixture forms stiff peaks, creating a thick, creamy foam. This foam can be whipped using an electric mixer or by hand, although hand whisking takes more effort. The whipped coffee topping is carefully spooned over milk, which can be chilled with ice cubes or warmed, depending on preference.

The drink’s hallmark is the contrast between the light, airy coffee froth and the smooth base of milk beneath. The whipped coffee provides a bold coffee flavor in a creamy, mousse-like texture that gradually blends into the milk with each sip. This preparation requires instant coffee as freshly ground coffee does not achieve the same consistency.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 Tbsp instant coffee (I used Moccona vanilla praline and it’s super tasty!)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp water hot
  • 3/4 cups milk ~ 1 cup, chilled or heated
  • ice cubes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine instant coffee, sugar and hot water in a mixing bowl. Mix them well. Then using a handheld mixer (stand mixer or milk frother) whisk it on high speed until the coffee mixture forms a stiff peak (2-4 mins). If you don’t have any of these tools, you can whisk it manually by hand. It still works! Just whisk it about 400 times.
  2. Add the ice cubes in a mug then pour over the milk. Scoop out the whipped coffee on top of the milk. Serve.

Notes

  • Use instant coffee to achieve the creamy whipped texture; other coffee types typically don’t work.
  • One tablespoon equals 15 ml for measurement accuracy.
  • Whisk with a mixer for 2-4 minutes or whisk by hand about 400 times until stiff peaks form.
