Easy Cheesy Cruffins

Easy Cheesy Cruffins use refrigerated crescent roll dough layered with garlic parmesan herb spread and shredded mild cheddar cheese. The dough is rolled, cut, and shaped into cinnamon roll-like spirals that bake into individual cheesy, buttery pastries with a crisp exterior and soft, flaky layers inside.

Description

This recipe transforms crescent roll dough into savory cruffins by spreading a garlic parmesan herb snack spread and cheddar cheese over sheeted dough. The dough is then rolled tightly into logs, cut into smaller sections, and re-rolled into spiraled shapes before baking in a muffin tin. This results in a layered pastry that combines buttery dough with melted cheese and garlic-herb flavors.

The method ensures even distribution of filling and an appealing spiral form, which creates a tender crumb inside and slightly crisp edges after baking. The topping brush with melted spread and kosher salt adds extra flavor and a subtle crunch to the exterior.

These cruffins are suitable for breakfast, snacks, or appetizers, offering a rich, cheesy taste with a buttery garlic note. The recipe allows substituting homemade garlic butter if a branded spread is unavailable, maintaining the flavor profile.

Notes include alternate filling and topping preparations using homemade garlic butter with minced garlic and chives, providing flexibility depending on ingredient availability.

Ingredients

Servings

Dough

  • 3 tubes crescent roll dough refrigerated, 8 ounces each

Filling*

  • ½ cup garlic parmesan herb snack spread room temperature, divided, Challenge® brand
  • 3 cups mild cheddar cheese shredded, divided, 339 g

Topping*

  • 3 tablespoons garlic parmesan herb snack spread melted, Challenge® brand
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

Dough

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly spray a standard 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. Working on a lightly floured work surface, roll out each tube of dough to a 12x16-inch rectangle. (We used crescent roll sheets; if you use perforated crescent roll dough, be sure to pinch the seams to seal.)

Filling

  1. Spread about ⅓ of the snack spread over the top of one sheet of dough.
  2. Sprinkle 1 cup of the cheddar cheese evenly over the butter.
  3. Starting on the long end of the dough sheet, tightly roll it up into a log.
  4. Cut the log in half, creating two shorter logs.
  5. Cut each of those shorter logs in half lengthwise, giving you four sections of dough.
  6. Repeat with the remaining two sheets of dough. You will have 12 sections of dough.
  7. Working one section of dough at a time with the layered side facing out, roll it tightly into a cinnamon roll shape, tucking in the end piece of dough.
  8. Place into the prepared muffin tin. Repeat with the remaining 11 sections.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Topping

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted snack spread and salt.
  2. Brush the butter topping over the warm rolls. Serve.

Notes

  • Substitute the branded garlic parmesan herb spread with homemade garlic butter mixed with chopped chives and garlic.
  • Brush topping with melted butter mixed with garlic, chives, and kosher salt for added flavor and texture.
  • Ensure seams are pinched together if using perforated crescent dough to prevent filling leakage.
