Easy Slow Cooker Dinner Rolls

Easy Slow Cooker Dinner Rolls use a yeast dough mixed with milk, honey, sugar, butter, and bread flour to form soft, elastic balls baked slowly in a crock pot. After cooking on high heat, the rolls develop a golden bottom crust. Brushed with melted butter and optionally sprinkled with coarse salt, they finish under the broiler for a browned top, yielding tender, fluffy rolls with a slight crust that are suitable for any meal accompaniment.

Description

The method involves warming milk and activating instant yeast before mixing in flour, honey, sugar, melted butter, and salt to form a soft dough. Kneading with a mixer dough hook develops elasticity. Dividing the dough into 12 equal portions and shaping into balls allows even cooking. Placing the rolls in a parchment-lined slow cooker and cooking on high for around 90 minutes cooks them through gently, avoiding drying.

Checking the bottoms for a brown crust helps ensure doneness. After removing from the crock pot, brushing with melted butter and sprinkling coarse salt adds flavor and moisture. Broiling briefly browns the tops, producing a visually appealing crust contrasting with the soft interiors. These rolls make a pleasant bread option without using a traditional oven baking process.

Ingredients

Servings

For Rolls:

  • 3 cups bread flour more may be needed, or all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast 1 packet
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Topping:

  • 1 Tablespoon butter melted
  • salt optional, coarse

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk in the microwave
  2. Pour the milk in the bowl of a mixer, sprinkle the yeast. Mix lightly and cover for 5 minutes for yeast to activate
  3. When the mixture starts to bubble add the flour, honey, sugar, melted butter, and salt
  4. Using the dough hook, mix on medium speed for 5-6 minutes or until dough becomes soft and elastic. You'll know the dough is ready when it cleans the sides of the bowl
  5. Remove from the mixer and place on the counter. Cut into 12 equal pieces (I used a weight to be more exact and each of my rolls weighted approximately 2.29 oz)
  6. Roll each piece into a ball
  7. Line slow cooker with parchment paper
  8. Place balls inside and cover
  9. Cook on HIGH for approximately 90 minutes
  10. Check the bottom to see if the bread is completely cooked (bottom should be browned)
  11. Remove from the crock pot and brush the tops with melted butter
  12. Sprinkle the tops with coarse salt (optional)
  13. Broil for 1-2 minutes or until the tops brown
  14. Enjoy!
