Ingredients
For the Chocolate Sheet Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
- ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
For the Frosting
- ¾ cup unsalted butter softened (1½ sticks)
- ⅓ cup water or milk
- 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- ¾ cup Chopped Pecans optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350℉.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth. Then, add in the water, and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, remove from heat.
- Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Using an electric mixer, mix in the eggs, sour cream, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the cocoa mixture into the flour ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Pour the batter into a greased 18x13-inch rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 17-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.
- In a saucepan, heat the butter and water/milk. Once warm, whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth. Bring the mixture to a boil. Then, take off the heat, and whisk in the powdered sugar, and pecans.
- Pour the frosting over the cake, using a spatula to cover it entirely.
Notes
- Storage: Store Texas sheet cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
