Freezer Apple Pie Filling

Make this apple pie filling in advance and store it in the freezer. Need a dessert for an impromptu gathering? Make a crust and bake a pie in no time!

Ingredients
- 3 pounds 7-8 baking apples, like Golden Delicious
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice fresh
- 2/3 cups granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup butter unsalted
- [1 teaspoon Apple Pie Spice]
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
- Peel, core, halve the apples and slice each half into 4 wedges. Place in a large bowl with the lemon juice. Fold apples so each is evenly coated with lemon juice.
- Add sugar and fold into apples.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat.
- Add the apples and cook until the sugar dissolves and the juice begins to simmer.
- Cover and reduce heat to medium-low, and cook until the apples soften slightly and releases their juices (approximately 5 minutes).
- Remove skillet from heat and strain apples in a colander, catching the juice in a bowl. Return the juice to the skillet and simmer over medium heat until it bubbles and begins to turn amber and thicken (about 10 minutes).
- In a large bowl, mix the apples with the juice from the apples and add the apple spice and nutmeg. Let cool completely.
Notes
- You can keep in the freezer for up to 6 month.
- Filling doesn't not need to be completely thawed before baking.
- Can this be made sugar free? Yes! Use granulated sugar free alternative of your choice like monk fruit.
