Grilled Halibut

This Grilled Halibut is one of t he seafood recipes that need just 10 mins of prep and 10 minutes of cooking. It's a delicious twist on our classic seafood recipes as it's marinated in Asian flavors. This recipe is great for indoor or outdoor grilling and it's perfect served on a stick :)

  • 2 halibut fillets

Marinade

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablesooons light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

Notes

  • Make sure you buy halibut fillet and not halibut steaks. This recipe works only for fillets where the pieces of fish is entirely boneless and skinless.
  • Ask your fish monger for fresh fish, always. It has to look firm with a clean white color, and no fishy smell.
  • Similar to the Miso Cod, this recipe has minimal ingredients, so make sure they're quality. Low sodium and organic soy sauce is preferable. And make sure your dried ginger spice is fresh.
  • While you can marinate the halibut before grilling for up to 3 hours, it's not necessary.
  • When choosing skewers for the fish, make sure you use the correct size. We used the 4.7 inch skewers as they were the perfect length for our fish strips.
  • You can grill the halibut in an outdoor gas or charcoal grill. Make sure to prepare the grill and follow the tips on  How to Grill Fish without it sticking.
  • Keep an eye on the halibut as you don't want to overcook it. When cut into strips, the fish requires just 2-3 minutes per side, depending on your grill.
  • If you have a meat thermometer, it should register 145 degrees F.
  • Try other marinades with the halibut. You can try a simple herb butter to slather on the fish when hot and ready off the grill.

  • Seafood and fish is always a good option when it comes to healthy eating. Fish like halibut is rich in omega 3 and nutrients, so it's highly recommended. If you buy wild caught fish, you’ll also be supporting sustainable farming.
  • As a fish, halibut is relatively one of the not "fishy" tasting fish. It has a mild flavor which makes it ideal for any type of marinade or seasoning. Halibut also has a semi firm texture which is why we LOVE to grill it. You can also make great Fish Tacos using it.
  • If you rely on a meat thermometer, the internal temperature you're looking for should be 145 degrees F. Otherwise, look for the fish when it flakes easily and has an opaque white color and firm texture.
  • Since we cut our fillets into strips and skewered them, our fish took 2-3minutes MAX per side. A whole fillet would take 5-6 minutes or so per side. Make sure not to overcook the halibut as it can dry out quickly.
