Hibiscus Lemonade

Hibiscus Lemonade is a refreshing beverage combining tangy lemon juice with floral hibiscus infusion sweetened to taste. Lemon zest and hibiscus flowers steeped in boiling water create a vibrant, colorful base that’s balanced with cold water and sweetener. This drink can be served chilled over ice and optionally spiked with gin or vodka for a cocktail variation.

Description

Hibiscus Lemonade blends the tartness of fresh lemon juice with the bright, slightly tart floral notes of hibiscus flowers. Lemon zest is steeped with crushed hibiscus petals and sweetener in boiling water to extract flavors and aromas. After about 15 minutes, the mixture is strained and combined with chilled lemon juice and cold water to dilute and balance the concentrate's intensity.

The result is a vivid, aromatic lemonade with a balance of citrus brightness and the subtle tart depth from the hibiscus. Sweetness is adjustable, with the recipe suggesting honey or sugar, and less sweetness possible for those who prefer a lighter taste. This lemonade is served over ice, ideal for warm weather refreshment.

For those wanting an adult beverage, adding gin or vodka transforms this lemonade into a Hibiscus Collins style cocktail, which highlights the floral and citrus flavors harmoniously.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup water boiling
  • 2 T lemon zest
  • 2 T hibiscus flowers probably about 3-4 tea bags if using, crushed
  • 1 c lemon juice
  • 3 cups water cold
  • 1/2 c sugar honey or sweetener (you might go as low as 1/3 cup if you are used to less sweet flavors)
  • gin for a Hibiscus Collins, or vodka; optional

Instructions

  1. Zest the lemon.
  2. Add the lemon zest, crushed hibiscus petals and honey, sugar or sweetener to a tea pot or ceramic bowl, then cover with boiling water. Cover and let sit for about 15 minutes to extract the flavors.
  3. Roll the lemons on a hard surface to break up the internal membranes then juice them.
  4. Strain the hibiscus water, then combine with the lemon juice and cold water.
  5. Serve over ice or store in refrigerator.

Notes

  • Steep hibiscus petals with lemon zest and sweetener in boiling water for about 15 minutes to extract full flavor.
  • Adjust sweetness to preference; honey or sugar works, with as little as 1/3 cup sugar for less sweet versions.
  • Serve the lemonade chilled over ice for best refreshment.
  • Adding gin or vodka can turn the lemonade into a floral, citrus cocktail.
