Homemade air fried cheese curds

Homemade air fried cheese curds are bite-sized pieces coated in seasoned flour, egg, and breadcrumbs, then crisped in an air fryer. This method produces a crispy outer crust while keeping the cheese inside softened and melty. The recipe carefully layers seasoning for balanced flavor and uses cooking spray to promote even browning.

Description

These Homemade Air Fried Cheese Curds start with cheese curds at room temperature to ensure even coating and melting. They are dredged through a flour seasoning mix that includes garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper, then dipped in beaten eggs before being rolled in gluten-free or panko breadcrumbs. This triple coating creates a firm crust after air frying.

The air frying process at 350°F crisps the outer layers without the excess oil of deep frying, maintaining a light texture while achieving a golden brown finish. The cheese inside remains soft and slightly melted, offering a contrasting texture.

Portioning the curds in a single layer in the basket and working in batches prevents overcrowding, which helps maintain crispiness. Lightly spraying the curds with cooking spray encourages browning and reduces sticking.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb cheese curds preferably at room temperature
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour or regular flour, gluten-free
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika optional for extra flavor
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 egg large
  • 1 cup gluten-free breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs
  • cooking spray for the air fryer basket

Instructions

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. In another bowl, beat the eggs until well combined.
  4. In a third bowl, place the gluten-free breadcrumbs or panko.
  5. Take each cheese curd and first coat it in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
  6. Dip the floured curd into the beaten eggs, allowing the excess to drip off.
  7. Finally, roll the curd in the breadcrumbs until fully coated, shaking off any extra in the end. Set aside on a plate and repeat with the remaining cheese curds.
  8. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  9. Place the breaded cheese curds in a single layer in the air fryer basket, making sure they are not touching. You may need to work in batches, frying just a few curds at a time to not overcrow the pan depending on the size of your air fryer.
  10. Lightly spray the tops of the cheese curds with cooking spray. This will help them get a nice golden color.
  11. Cook for 6-8 minutes, or until the cheese curds are golden brown and crispy. Halfway through the cooking time, gently shake the basket or use tongs to turn the cheese curds to ensure even cooking.
  12. Once done, carefully remove the cheese curds from the air fryer and let them cool for a minute or two. They will be very hot inside.
  13. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as marinara, ranch dressing, or a gluten-free spicy mayo.
