Homemade Apple Butter

This smooth, velvety homemade Apple Butter is made using simple ingredients of apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and lemon juice, cooked low and slow resulting in a spreadable treat to use in or on many of your fall recipes!

  • 3 pounds Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, and diced
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • cup water
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice ½ a lemon
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Place the diced apples, water, and lemon juice in a blender.
  2. Blend on high for 1-2 minutes until completely smooth.
  3. Pour the pureed apple mixture to a slow cooker and add the brown sugar and cinnamon on top.
  4. Cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until the it is dark brown. Stir the apple butter every hour or two so that is doesn't burn on the bottom.

Notes

  • Use other apples like Macintosh, Courtland, Honeycrisp, Fuji or Gala apples.
  • Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  • You can add all the ingredients unblended to the crock pot and cook. then puree it after cooking to desired consistency.
  • Place in an airtight jar and refrigerate for up to two weeks.
  • Freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Adjust the sugar to your liking. I prefer a little less added sweetness but feel free to add up to a cup of sugar. Use a mixture of half and half brown sugar and white sugar if you prefer.
