Homemade Banana Pudding
Description
This recipe layers homemade vanilla pudding with fresh sliced bananas and Nilla wafer cookies in a 2-2.5 quart dish. Starting with a pudding base that includes butter and vanilla, the assembly alternates cookies, bananas, and pudding twice to build creamy layers. Chilling for at least four hours, covered with plastic wrap touching the pudding to prevent skin, lets the flavors meld and the wafers soften.
The resulting dessert balances the smooth, rich vanilla pudding against the tender bananas and softened cookies that add subtle texture contrast. Topping with whipped cream before serving adds lightness and extra creaminess.
Serve this banana pudding chilled as a comforting dessert that can be made in advance. It works well for family gatherings or potlucks.
Doubling the recipe may be necessary when using a large trifle dish to have enough layers and portion.
Ingredients
- 1 vanilla pudding homemade, batch
- 3 banana sliced, medium or 4 small
- ½ box Nilla wafer cookies about 6 ounces
- Whipped Cream homemade
Instructions
- Make the vanilla pudding as directed. After stirring in the butter and vanilla, set aside.
- Line the bottom of a 2-2.5 quart baking dish with a layer of Nilla Wafers, topped by a layer of banana slices. Pour over half of the vanilla pudding. Repeat the layers one more time.
- Place a layer of plastic wrap over the pudding so that the plastic touches the top of the pudding. Chill for at least 4 hours. Before serving, top with as much homemade whipped cream as you desire. Garnish with additional Nilla Water cookies.
Notes
- Cover the pudding with plastic wrap touching the surface to prevent a skin from forming during chilling.
- Chill for at least 4 hours to allow layers to set and flavors to meld.
- Top with fresh homemade whipped cream just before serving for best texture.
- Double the recipe if layering in a large trifle dish to ensure enough pudding and layers.
