Homemade Fabric Softener
Description
Homemade Fabric Softener blends hot distilled water with hair conditioner to dissolve clumps and create a smooth mixture. Vinegar is then incorporated to complete the softening solution. The conditioner choice influences the fragrance, with options ranging from economical dollar store brands to popular names, all working comparably for softness.
The fabric softener is stored at room temperature in airtight containers and used in laundry machines' softener compartments or during the rinse cycle. Typical usage ranges from half to a full cup per load, depending on preference and load size.
The recipe also suggests a DIY alternative fabric softener using vinegar combined with baking soda and essential oils for those without conditioner, which produces less softness but still improves laundry feel. Additionally, it can be used as a dryer sheet substitute by applying the solution to a sponge, wringing it well, and adding it to the dryer cycle.
Ingredients
- 5 cups distilled water hot
- 3 cups vinegar
- 1 cup hair conditioner
Instructions
- In a medium bowl add very hot water and the conditioner. (Water doesn't need to be boiling, but hot enough that it helps smooth any clumps from the conditioner).
- Whisk together until smooth and clump free.
- Add in vinegar and whisk to combine.
- Pour into containers of choice such as wide mouth quart mason jars. Store in air tight container at room temperature for up to 5 months.
- Use the same amount as you would a store bought softener and add to the regular softener spot in your washer or during the rinse cycle. Usually for me this is around 1/2 cup to 1 cup softener per load.
Notes
- Cheap hair conditioner works as well as more expensive brands for this softener.
- Use between 1/2 to 1 cup per laundry load in the machine's softener compartment or rinse cycle.
- Homemade fabric softener can also be applied to a sponge and used as a DIY dryer sheet.
- An alternative softener can be made from vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils if conditioner is unavailable.
