Homemade French Onion Dip
Description
This dip starts by slowly caramelizing diced Vidalia onions in oil and butter over medium heat until golden brown and deeply sweet, a process that takes 30–35 minutes. Once cooled, the onions are folded into a mixture of sour cream, mayonnaise, seasoned salt, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. The resulting dip is rich, creamy, and balanced with savory and slightly sweet notes from the caramelized onions.
The dip is served chilled after at least an hour or overnight in the refrigerator, allowing the flavors to better integrate. It pairs well with chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables for snacking and gatherings.
To caramelize onions properly, use a moderate heat and stir regularly to avoid burning. Store leftovers in an airtight container refrigerated up to three days.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons canola oil or olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 2 onion diced, large Vidalia
- 2 cups sour cream
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- salt to taste
Instructions
- In a large saute pan over medium heat, add oil and butter. When butter is melted, add onions and saute, stirring often, until golden brown and caramelized, about 30-35 minutes. This may take less time depending on the size of your onions and your cooktop. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
- Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, seasoned salt, garlic powder, Worcestershire, salt and pepper. Fold in caramelized onions. Chill at least 1 hour or overnight prior to serving.
Notes
- Store the dip covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
- Caramelize onions slowly over medium heat to develop a deep flavor without burning.
