Homemade Irish Cream
Description
This Homemade Irish Cream recipe starts with dissolving instant coffee and unsweetened cocoa powder into a small amount of cream for a uniform flavor base. Then, the remaining cream and sweetened condensed milk are added along with Irish whiskey and vanilla extract. Blending these components creates a harmonious mixture combining the sweetness and creaminess with the warmth of whiskey and the depth of coffee and cocoa.
The liqueur has a silky texture and balanced flavor that can be adjusted by varying the whiskey amount, espresso, or cocoa. It can be poured over ice, used in coffee, or incorporated into desserts. Keeping it refrigerated preserves freshness for several months.
The recipe allows flexibility with cream types and flavor adjustments. Using half and half instead of heavy cream can lighten the texture. Adjusting espresso or cocoa levels alters the coffee or chocolate notes. The liqueur can be enjoyed as is or used as a base in various drinks and desserts.
Ingredients
- 1 cup heavy cream or whipping cream
- 1 tsp instant coffee do not use ground coffee!, or instant espresso powder
- 1/2 tsp cocoa powder unsweetened
- 1 cup Irish whiskey
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 14 oz sweetened condensed milk can
Instructions
- Put a tablespoon of the cream in a bowl and add the espresso and cocoa powder. Mix these together until both powders are completely dissolved and there are no lumps. Have patience here, it takes a couple of minutes for the little grains of instant coffee and cocoa powder to fully dissolve.
- Add the rest of the cream, while stirring, or gently whisking.
- Add the whiskey, vanilla, and condensed milk and blend everything well. Note: alternatively you can put everything in a blender and blend briefly. Blend just long enough to combine.
- Take a taste ~ this is now your own custom liqueur, adjust any of the ingredients to your liking.
- Pour the mixture into a clean bottle with a top, and refrigerate until needed.
- This will keep in the fridge for at least a couple of months, and probably longer, but I'm pretty sure you will polish it off before then ;)
Notes
- For a lighter texture, substitute half and half for heavy cream.
- Adjust whiskey amount to make the liqueur stronger or milder according to preference.
- Increase espresso or cocoa powder to tweak the flavor balance toward coffee or chocolate.
- This Irish Cream stores refrigerated for at least a couple of months.
