How to Cook Rice Without a Rice Cooker

This guide explains how to cook white or brown rice on the stovetop without a rice cooker, focusing on soaking the rice first to improve texture and even cooking. It uses straightforward soaking, draining, and simmering steps resulting in fluffy, tender rice. This simple method offers control over the rice quality and can be adapted for any amount using common kitchen tools.

Description

To cook rice without a rice cooker, start by measuring your desired amount of white or brown rice and soak it in water on the counter for about 15 to 20 minutes. Soaking helps hydrate the grains for more even cooking. After soaking, drain the water completely. Then measure an equal amount of fresh water corresponding to the rice measurement—add slightly more water for brown rice to accommodate its firmer texture.

Place the pot on medium-high heat and bring the water and rice to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and let it simmer. White rice usually takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, while brown rice requires 20 to 25 minutes. The covered simmering process steams the rice until the water is absorbed and the grains are tender but separate.

This straightforward stovetop method requires no special tools and can easily be adjusted based on the quantity of rice you need. The soaking and cooked rice can be served as a versatile base for many dishes.

Ingredients

  • rice (white rice or brown rice)
  • water

Instructions

  1. Measure however much rice you want, and take note of the measurement. (You don't need any special measuring tools for this step. You could just use any cup or mug you have). Put the rice in the pot, and cover with about 2 inches of water. Let the rice soak for 15-20 minutes on the counter. Once the rice has soaked, drain off the water it was soaking in. You should now just have a pot of soaked rice.
  2. Now remember the amount of rice you put into the pot? Measure the same amount of fresh water and pour it into the pot (for brown rice, add a little more water).
  3. Put the pot over the stove on medium high heat. Once the liquid comes to a boil, turn the heat to low, cover, and cook for around 10-15 minutes (white rice) or 20-25 minutes (brown rice). And that's it!
