How to make Color Changing Alcohol (Vodka, Tequila and Gin)

This recipe explains how to infuse vodka, gin, and silver tequila with butterfly pea flowers to create color-changing alcohol. The flowers give the spirits a deep blue or purple color that shifts when a small amount of baking soda is added, illustrating a visual transformation in the liquor.

Description

Start by placing dried butterfly pea flowers in jars filled with vodka, gin, or silver tequila and infuse them overnight until the spirits acquire a dark purple or blue hue. Strain the infused alcohol into clean bottles. Optionally, add incremental pinches of baking soda to the bottles to shift the color from purple to blue, stirring gently and stopping once the desired blue tint appears.

The process leverages the natural pigment of the butterfly pea flowers, which reacts with alkalinity from the baking soda to cause the color change. This technique provides a visually striking effect in the spirits. The infusion should be stored in a cool place or refrigerated until use.

The infused liquors can be used for cocktails where the color transformation adds an intriguing presentation element. It's important to add baking soda sparingly to avoid altering the taste excessively.

  3. When the spirits turn dark purple or blue in color, strain the alcohol into bottles.

For the vodka and tequila

  1. If the liquor is purple, and you prefer the alcohol to be blue, using the flat toothpick or a small spoon, transfer a pinch of baking soda into each of the bottles. Swirl to mix and check the color.
  2. Repeat with very small amounts of baking soda, until it turns blue (stop adding as soon as you notice the desired blue color).
  3. Store all infused liquors in a cool place (or fridge or freezer), until needed.
