How to Make Oat Milk

Report
This oat milk recipe blends oats with water, maple syrup, vanilla, and salt, then strains to create a smooth, mildly sweet plant-based milk alternative. The result is a creamy liquid with a subtle oat flavor that can be chilled and used similarly to dairy milk. Leftover oat pulp can be reused for other dishes.

Description

Oat milk is prepared by blending oats with water and flavoring components including maple syrup, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt to enhance taste. The mixture is blended until the oats are finely broken down, then strained through a nut milk bag or muslin to separate the liquid from the pulp, producing smooth oat milk.

This homemade milk alternative lacks certain stabilizers found in commercial products, so it may separate naturally and should be shaken before use. It will have a different texture, lacking the frothiness some store-bought oat milks have but delivers a mild, creamy oat flavor. Serving it chilled improves enjoyment.

The oat pulp leftover from straining can be repurposed in recipes like smoothies or porridge to avoid waste. To limit sliminess, it is recommended not to over-extract the liquid. For gluten-free diets, use certified gluten-free oats.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 110 g oats
  • 750 ml water
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt sea salt

Instructions

  1. Place all of the ingredients into a blender.
  2. Blend until the oats are as fine as possible.
  3. Place a nut milk bag (or muslin) over a bowl, and empty the oat mixture into it.
  4. Squeeze the bag to extract as much milk as possible.
  5. Pour into a glass or bottle and refrigerate.

Notes

  • Chill oat milk well before serving for best flavor.
  • Shake well before use as separation is normal without stabilizers.
  • Save leftover pulp for smoothies or porridge to reduce waste.
  • Avoid squeezing the oat mixture too much to prevent slimy texture.
  • Use certified gluten-free oats to ensure gluten-free oat milk.
