Ingredients

Servings

  • 1 tablespoon sugar optional
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon corn starch cornflour (UK), mixed with a little milk

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk and sugar together in a small saucepan and whisk, then break the chocolate into it.
  2. Continue to heat while you whisk until all the chocolate has melted into the milk.
  3. Add the constarch/cornflour mixture and cook, stirring constantly, for 2 to 4 minutes until the mixture has thickened a little (it should coat the whisk).
  4. Pour into cups and sprinkle with a little extra grated chocolate (if you like).

Notes

  • Serving tips: I don’t like cream, but go ahead and top your thick hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows if you’re in the mood for a bigger treat than usual!
  • The hot chocolate might still seem quite thin when you pour it into your cups, but bear in mind it will thicken up more as it cools.
  • This would also make a delicious chocolate sauce for ice cream or cake.
  • Variations: Try adding a little peppermint or vanilla essence, or use flavored chocolate for a tasty twist on the regular recipe. Cinnamon, coffee, orange zest, or even a small pinch of chili powder can also work very well!
  • Storage: Pop the leftovers in the fridge to make a delicious thick chocolate pudding - just for you! Leftovers will keep well for 3 to 4 days covered well in the fridge. Simply reheat gently on the stove again, adding a drizzle more milk if it seems too thick.
  • Another amazing Italian chocolate treat: You just have to try this tenerina torta (Italian chocolate cake) as well! It's amazingly delicious with its crisp top and fudgy inside!
