Iced Matcha Latte

This Iced Matcha Latte blends vibrant green matcha powder whisked into hot water forming a smooth, frothy base combined with milk and ice for a refreshing, creamy drink. Sweetened with homemade simple syrup, the balance of earthy matcha and sweetness makes it an appealing iced beverage for tea lovers. The use of fresh simple syrup allows control over syrup consistency and sweetness.

Description

The recipe starts with preparing a simple syrup by dissolving white sugar in hot water, then chilling it to add sweetness without granularity. Matcha powder is whisked into a small amount of very hot water until completely smooth and slightly frothy. This careful whisking technique ensures no lumps, forming a uniform and vibrant green mixture.

In a glass, ice and milk are combined, then the prepared matcha mixture is poured in and stirred to integrate the flavors. Finally, chilled simple syrup is adjusted to taste, sweetening the latte while preserving the grassy, slightly bitter matcha notes. This balance creates a refreshing cold drink with creamy mouthfeel and a subtle sweetness.

The drink is ideal for warm weather or as a caffeine alternative to coffee, enjoyed on its own or accompanied by light snacks.

Ingredients

Servings

Simple syrup

  • ¼ c white sugar
  • 3 tbsp water hot

Matcha latte

  • 3 tsp matcha powder
  • 2 tbsp water hot
  • ice
  • 8 oz milk

Instructions

Simple syrup

  1. Heat the water in a kettle, on the stove, or in the microwave until it’s very hot, but not boiling. Add the white sugar in and mix until it dissolves. If the granules are not dissolving, pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds then stir.
  2. Place in the fridge for 15 minutes to chill before adding into the latte.

Matcha latte

  1. Heat the water in a kettle until it’s super hot, almost boiling.
  2. Add the matcha powder into a small bowl or a chawan.
  3. Add one tablespoon of water in and use the whisk or handheld frother to stir. Move your hand in concentric circles around the perimeter of the bowl to fully blend the fine powder and water together. Add additional water if necessary. The mixture should be completely smooth and slightly frothy on top when it’s finished.
  4. In a glass cup, add ice, pour the milk, and add the matcha mixture. Stir until the latte is combined. Add your chilled simple syrup to sweeten and drink!
