Irish Coffee (Irish Coffee Recipe from a Dublin Pub)

Irish Coffee combines freshly brewed hot coffee with Irish whiskey and sugar, topped with gently whipped heavy cream poured over the back of a spoon to float. This technique produces a layered drink with warm, sweet, and boozy coffee complemented by a smooth, creamy topping that doesn’t mix in.

Description

This classic Irish Coffee starts by lightly whipping heavy cream to a pourable yet thick consistency. Sugar and Irish whiskey are combined in a heat-resistant glass, then hot freshly brewed coffee is poured in and stirred to dissolve the sugar. Using the back of a spoon held against the glass, the cream is carefully poured to create a distinct layer on top of the coffee.

The result is a harmonious beverage where the bitter warmth of the coffee blends with the sweetness and alcohol from the whiskey and sugar below, while the cool, creamy layer above adds texture and balances the flavors. The cream remains separate, allowing each sip to mix warm liquid and cream smoothly.

The recipe notes that to serve two drinks, simply double the ingredient amounts. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the whiskey though this changes the classic character of the drink.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tsp sugar or a sugar cube
  • 2 oz Irish whiskey
  • 5 oz coffee hot, freshly brewed
  • 1 oz heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  1. Whip the cream gently so that it is in between runny and stiff. It should be a much less runny, but still be able to pour slowly.
  2. Put the sugar and whiskey in an Irish coffee mug or glass (8 oz).
  3. Pour in the hot coffee and stir to dissolve the sugar.
  4. Using a tablespoon, turn it upside down and hold it against the side of the glass and gently pour the cream over the back of the spoon. It will stay as a layer on top of the coffee without mixing with it if it's done correctly.
  5. Wipe the edge of the glass and serve immediately without stirring the cream into the coffee.

Notes

  • Double the ingredient quantities for two servings.
  • The non-alcoholic version omits whiskey but will no longer be traditional Irish coffee.
