Irish Soda Bread Without Buttermilk

This Irish soda bread recipe without buttermilk takes less than 60 minutes to prepare, the recipe is super simple and quick to make. Irish soda bread is a type of quick bread that is made without yeast and instead with baking powder. No proofing is required, so making a batch is fairly quick.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg beaten, large
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup PLAIN yogurt
  • 1/2 cup raisins optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C), and line a flat baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl stir together flour, baking powder, soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Make a well in the center of the mixture.
  5. In a small mixing bowl combine egg white and milk and yogurt.
  6. Add all at once to dry the mixture and include the raisins which are optional. Stir just till moistened.
  7. On a lightly floured surface knead dough 12 to 14 strokes till the dough is nearly smooth.
  8. Shape the dough into a 7-inch round loaf.
  9. Place soda bread dough on a lightly greased baking pan and score the top with a sharp knife, making 2 slashes to form an X.
  10. Bake for about 25-30 minutes or till golden.
  11. Remove from the oven and Serve warm.
  12. Enjoy
