  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ pound Italian sausage mild, ground
  • ½ small yellow onion diced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning divided
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper ground
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced
  • 1 cup marinara sauce 257 g
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 ½ cups mozzarella cheese shredded, divided
  • ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese finely grated, 25 g
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • basil chopped for garnish, fresh
  • Crostini for dipping, or breadsticks or crackers

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. To a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil. Once hot, add sausage, onion, ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 8 minutes, breaking up the sausage with a spoon, until the sausage is fully cooked.
  3. Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  4. Stir in marinara sauce and bring to a simmer. Once simmering, remove the skillet from heat.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, ½ cup of shredded mozzarella, parmesan, the remaining Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir until well mixed.
  6. Spread the ricotta mixture evenly in the bottom of a small oven-safe skillet or baking dish.
  7. Add the sausage mixture evenly on top of the ricotta layer. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sausage layer.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  9. Remove from the oven and garnish with chopped fresh basil. Serve hot with breadsticks, crostini, or crackers for dipping.
