The mint julep is an American cocktail made with bourbon, sugar, water, crushed ice and fresh mint, associated with the Kentucky Derby.

Ingredients
For the mint syrup
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup caster sugar
- 5 sprigs fresh mint
- For the mint julep
- 2 oz. bourbon
- 3 tablespoons mint syrup , previously prepared
- 3 drops angostura bitters , optional
- 1 sprig fresh mint with leaves
- crushed ice
Equipment
- Silver metal goblet , in pewter or white metal
- Muddler

Instructions
Mint sirup
- Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil.
- Stir the syrup and immediately remove the pan from the heat.
- Dip the mint in the hot syrup and let cool to room temperature.
- Once the syrup has cooled, remove the mint and store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
Mint Julep
- Place the mint leaves at the bottom of the cup.
- Pour the 3 tablespoons of mint syrup.
- Crush the mint leaves and syrup using a cocktail muddler.
- Add bourbon and fill with crushed ice.
- Stir the cocktail until the goblet is frosted.
- Add a few drops of Angostura bitters (optional).
- Garnish with the sprig of fresh mint with leaves.
