Monte Cristo Waffle Sandwich

The Monte Cristo Waffle Sandwich is a layered savory and sweet creation using whole grain toaster waffles, Swiss cheese, shaved ham, optional turkey, and raspberry jam. The sandwich is dipped briefly in an egg and milk mixture and then pan-fried in butter until golden and the cheese melts, combining crispy waffle exterior with a creamy, melted cheese and ham interior spiked with fruity jam. This technique yields a satisfying mix of textures and balanced flavors, ideal for a brunch or indulgent snack.

Description

The Monte Cristo Waffle Sandwich features toasted whole grain waffles as the bread substitute, layered with shredded Swiss cheese and shaved honey-baked ham, with an option to add turkey. The combination of savory meats and cheese contrasts with a spread of raspberry jam on the sandwich top. The sandwich is dipped in a beaten egg and milk batter before frying in butter, which crisps the waffle and melts the cheese inside. Cooking with a cover ensures even melting and a nicely browned exterior.

This sandwich offers a blend of sweet and savory profiles, with the jam adding a fruity element complementing the ham and cheese. The whole grain waffles give structure and a slightly nutty flavor. It can be served warm immediately after cooking, providing a hearty brunch or casual meal option.

Since the sandwich is pan-fried after dipping in egg batter, careful cooking on medium heat and using butter enhances the rich flavor and avoids burning. Covering the pan during cooking helps to evenly melt the cheese and heat the filling through.
