Mulled Cider

Report
Mulled Cider is a warm spiced beverage made by simmering apple cider and juice with fresh orange, quartered apples, brown sugar, mulled spices, and a splash of dark rum. The mixture is gently heated to blend aromatic spice flavors and fruit notes, resulting in a fragrant drink ideal for chilly evenings or camping trips.

Description

This Mulled Cider recipe combines cider and apple juice with fresh orange slices and juice, quartered apples, a packet of mulled spices, brown sugar, and dark rum. These ingredients are simmered together gently over low heat to infuse the cider with the warm flavors of spices and fruit. The method involves a 10-15 minute simmer followed by straining to remove the spices, ensuring a clear, smooth drink without unwanted solids like cloves.

The drink offers a balance of sweetness from the brown sugar and apples, tanginess from the oranges, and depth from the dark rum and mulled spices. It provides warmth and comfort on cold nights and can be a special adult beverage for outdoor or indoor gatherings.

A splash of cranberry juice can be added for an additional flavor dimension. Careful simmering, rather than boiling, preserves the delicate flavors and prevents harsh alcohol notes from evaporation or burning.

  • Mulled spice packets contain potent spices, so there’s no need to add extra to avoid overwhelming the drink.
  • It is important to strain out all solid spices after simmering to prevent biting into whole cloves or other spices.
  • Keep the mixture at a gentle simmer without boiling to maintain the smoothness and flavor balance of the cider and rum.
