Red velvet donuts are pretty red-colored cake donuts topped with creamy and tangy cream cheese icing! It is a colorful fun twist on regular cake donuts, and they are perfect for Valentine's and Christmas Day.

Red Velvet Donuts
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 6 tablespoons butter melted
- 2 large eggs room temp
- 2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
- 2-3 teaspoons Red food coloring adjust as needed
Cream Cheese Icing:
- 4 ounces cream cheese room temp
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter room temp
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1-2 tablespoons heavy cream optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350° F. and spray a donut pan with cooking spray.
- In a bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt together.
- In a large bowl, mix the buttermilk, melted butter, eggs, vanilla, and vinegar.
- Add the buttermilk mixture (wet ingredients) to the bowl with the dry ingredients (the flour mixture.)
- Add the red food coloring and stir until well combined.
- Spoon or pipe the dough into the donut pan.
- Bake for 10 minutes. Cool for 2 minutes, then place the donuts on a cooling rack. Repeat until all the dough has been baked.
Notes
- If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make your own substitute. Combine 1 cup of milk with a tablespoon of vinegar. Let sit for 3 minutes before using.
- Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
