Red Velvet Donuts Recipe

Red velvet donuts are pretty red-colored cake donuts topped with creamy and tangy cream cheese icing! It is a colorful fun twist on regular cake donuts, and they are perfect for Valentine's and Christmas Day.

Red Velvet Donuts

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 6 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 large eggs room temp
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 2-3 teaspoons Red food coloring adjust as needed

Cream Cheese Icing:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese room temp
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter room temp
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons heavy cream optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. and spray a donut pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt together.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the buttermilk, melted butter, eggs, vanilla, and vinegar.
  4. Add the buttermilk mixture (wet ingredients) to the bowl with the dry ingredients (the flour mixture.)
  5. Add the red food coloring and stir until well combined.
  6. Spoon or pipe the dough into the donut pan.
  7. Bake for 10 minutes. Cool for 2 minutes, then place the donuts on a cooling rack. Repeat until all the dough has been baked.

Notes

  • If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make your own substitute. Combine 1 cup of milk with a tablespoon of vinegar. Let sit for 3 minutes before using.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
