Rich and Delicious Coffee Substitute

This coffee substitute combines roasted chicory root and roasted dandelion root steeped in water to create a rich, dark beverage with a deep flavor reminiscent of coffee. Prepared in a French press or by boiling, it offers a caffeine-free alternative. Adding coconut milk, sweetener, and optional cocoa enhances the creamy, slightly sweet finish, making it a comforting hot drink option.

Description

The Rich and Delicious Coffee Substitute uses roasted chicory and dandelion roots to mimic the robust taste of coffee. The roots are steeped in hot water, either in a French press—where the grounds are immersed and filtered using a plunger—or boiled and strained through a fine mesh. This process releases earthy, slightly bitter flavors that form a dark, aromatic brew.

The addition of coconut milk provides creaminess, while sweeteners like stevia and a dash of salt balance the bitterness. Optional coconut oil and cocoa enrich the beverage, giving it a smooth texture and subtle chocolate notes. The drink is both warming and flavorful without any caffeine.

This substitute can be served hot or with ice cubes to quickly cool it down after pouring. Using filtered water ensures a cleaner taste. Roasting the dandelion root intensifies the flavor, and freshly made coconut milk adds a frothy finish similar to frothed dairy milk.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tablespoon Chicory Root (roasted)
  • 1 tablespoon dandelion root (roasted - see notes above)
  • 32 - 35 ounces water (about 4 cups, plus a little) (preferably filtered)

Instructions

For French Press Owners

  1. Bring water to a boil.
  2. Put chicory and dandelion root in the press.
  3. Add water to french press.
  4. Let stand for at least 4 minutes.
  5. Depress plunger slowly.
  6. Add some sweetener of choice - I use stevia plus a dash of salt, Coconut Milk, plus a little coconut oil and some cocoa.
  7. Enjoy!

If you do not have a french press, then you can alternatively

  1. Place water, chicory root and dandelion root in a pot.
  2. Boil and simmer for 2-10 minutes.
  3. Strain through a fine mesh strainer and serve.

Notes

  • Roast dandelion root at home on a cookie sheet or toast carefully in a pan to develop richer flavor.
  • Freshly made coconut milk adds a frothy topping reminiscent of frothed milk; you can also use pre-made coconut milk.
  • Adding 1-2 ice cubes after pouring helps cool the drink quickly for immediate enjoyment.
  • Use filtered water for better taste and health benefits.
