Shrimp and Dill Appetizer

This Shrimp and Dill Appetizer combines steamed shrimp with a creamy dill sauce, finished with a touch of lemon zest. The shrimp stay tender through gentle steaming, and the sauce, made of sour cream, mayonnaise, fresh dill, and lemon zest, offers a fresh contrast. Served on cucumber slices, it makes for a light and refreshing appetizer that balances cool textures with bright flavor.

Description

Shrimp and Dill Appetizer uses peeled, tail-off shrimp quickly steamed until just cooked through. The shrimp are then chilled and tossed in a sauce blending sour cream, mayonnaise, freshly chopped dill, lemon zest, and salt, which brings a creamy yet herbal note highlighting the shrimp's natural sweetness. The appetizer is assembled by placing each sauced shrimp atop crisp cucumber slices, creating a crisp, cool base that complements the creamy, zesty seafood topping. This dish suits gatherings or light bites where a refreshing contrast of textures and mild tartness works well. The shrimp marinate briefly in the sauce to absorb the flavor before serving, enhancing the overall balance of the appetizer.

Notes

  • The shrimp need to be fully thawed and peeled with tails removed before steaming for best cooking results.
  • Chilling the shrimp in the sauce for at least an hour helps develop the flavors; overnight is preferable if time allows.
  • Arrange one shrimp per cucumber slice just before serving to keep cucumbers crisp.
  • Fresh dill and lemon zest are key to the recipe's bright, fresh flavor.
