Snickerdoodle Caramelita Bars
Description
The base consists of a crumble made from flour, quick-cook oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, and melted butter, pressed into a pan and baked partially. When baked once, it forms a sturdy but tender crust. White chocolate chips and caramel sauce provide sweet, creamy layers in the middle before topping with remaining crumble and cinnamon sugar.
Baking again melts the chocolate chips and caramel slightly, creating a chewy center with a contrast of spice from cinnamon sugar on top. A recommended chilling period of several hours or refrigeration before slicing helps the bars hold their shape.
These bars suit dessert or snack occasions and pair well with coffee or tea. Sprinkling additional cinnamon sugar after baking intensifies the complementing spiced flavor. Using salted maple caramel sauce enhances the sweet-savory depth.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cups instant oats quick cook
- 1 1/2 cups brown sugar loosely packed
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon McCormick ground
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter melted
- 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips
- 1 (10 ounce) jar caramel sauce
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon sugar plus more for sprinkling, McCormick
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9x13-inch pan with nonstick spray.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, sugar, cinnamon, baking soda and salt. Stir in the melted butter until a crumbly dough forms.
- Press half of the dough into the pan. Bake for 15 minutes.
- Sprinkle with the chocolate chips immediately. Drizzle on the caramel sauce. Sprinkle the remaining crumble on top. Sprinkle on the Cinnamon Sugar. Bake for another 15 to 20 minutes.
- Remove and sprinkle on a bit more Cinnamon Sugar. Let sit for 4 to 6 hours before slicing. I love to stick these in the fridge and slice!
Notes
- Salted maple caramel sauce can be used to add a nuanced sweet and salty flavor.
- Allow bars to sit for 4 to 6 hours or refrigerate before slicing to achieve clean cuts.
- Quick-cook oats contribute a tender oat texture that blends well into the crumble base.
