Strawberry Gin Smash

Report
The Strawberry Gin Smash is a refreshing cocktail featuring a homemade strawberry simple syrup made from cane sugar, water, and diced strawberries simmered until jam-like. It combines muddled fresh strawberries and lime juice with gin and the strawberry syrup, topped with club soda for a light effervescence. The drink is garnished with fresh mint and strawberry slices, balancing sweetness and citrus with the botanical notes of gin.

Description

This cocktail starts with a strawberry simple syrup created by boiling and simmering cane sugar, water, and fresh diced strawberries to dissolve the sugar and extract berry flavor and aroma. The syrup adds natural strawberry sweetness and body to the drink.

The actual cocktail is made by gently muddling fresh large strawberries with fresh lime juice, then combining it with gin and a measured amount of the strawberry syrup. The mixture is strained over ice into glasses and topped with club soda to provide a fizzy, light finish.

The cocktail offers a balance of sweet, tart, and botanical flavors, thanks to the interplay of strawberries, lime, and gin. It is suitable for warm weather or occasions when a bright, fruity drink is desired. Garnishing with mint and strawberry slices adds both visual appeal and fresh aroma.

Extra strawberry syrup can be stored in the refrigerator and repurposed for topping yogurt, ice cream, or additional cocktails. If preferred, the cocktail can be served without straining to retain strawberry pieces.

Cocktail

  • 1 lime
  • 4 strawberry large
  • 4 oz gin

Instructions

For the syrup:

  2. Mash the berries around a bit to encourage them to turn into a jam-like substance.
  3. Reduce to a simmer for 5-10 minutes until the sugar dissolves, then remove from the heat and let cool for 20 minutes.

For the cocktail:

  1. In a cocktail shaker (or tall glass), add 4 large strawberries and the juice from the lime. Give it a gentle muddle.
  2. Add the gin and 2 oz of strawberry simple syrup. Stir.

  4. Top each glass with club soda and garnish with fresh mint sprigs and a strawberry slice. Enjoy!

Notes

  • If you prefer a textured drink, you can skip straining the cocktail and enjoy the strawberry pieces.
  • Extra strawberry syrup keeps well refrigerated and can be used in other cocktails or as a topping for yogurt and ice cream.
