The Easiest Salted Caramel Brownies

The Easiest Salted Caramel Brownies combine a boxed brownie mix with rich dark chocolate caramel squares layered in the middle and topped with flaky sea salt. Baking yields a fudgy, chocolatey treat with pockets of melted caramel that add a chewy texture and deep flavor contrast. The finishing sea salt sprinkled on top highlights the sweetness and complements the chocolate.

Description

This recipe uses a standard boxed brownie mix blended with water, vegetable oil, and egg to create the base batter. Half of the batter is spread in a prepared 8x8-inch pan, then tightly layered with dark chocolate caramel squares before covering with the remaining brownie batter. Baking at 325°F for around 40 minutes cooks the brownies through, leaving gooey caramel in the center. Once baked and slightly cooled, the brownies are sprinkled with flaky sea salt that enhances the blend of sweet and savory flavors.

The texture is fudgy and dense, with melted caramel providing soft, chewy centers between chocolate layers. The flaky sea salt offers occasional bursts of salinity against the sweet chocolate and caramel backdrop.

Cooling the brownies for 15-20 minutes before serving helps them set slightly, making slicing easier and preventing the caramel from being too runny. The recipe is simple and depends on high-quality chocolate caramel squares for the signature salted caramel component.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 brownie mix 18-ounce box, Ghirardelli brand, flavors Double Chocolate or Chocolate Supreme
  • ¼ cup water
  • cup vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 dark chocolate caramel squares 6.3-ounce bag, Ghirardelli brand, dark chocolate sea salt flavor
  • sea salt flaky

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Prepare an 8x8-inch baking pan by lightly greasing, spraying with nonstick cooking spray, or lining with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine brownie mix, water, oil and egg and mix until well combined.
  3. Spoon half the batter into the prepared pan and smooth into an even layer. Unwrap the chocolate squares and place them directly onto the brownie batter. You don’t have to use all of them, but I typically put them into the pan pretty tightly. Spoon the remaining batter over the chocolate squares and again, spread the batter evenly to cover the chocolate squares.
  4. Bake in preheated oven for 39-40 minutes.
  5. Remove pan from oven and lightly sprinkle the brownies with flaky sea salt.
  6. Allow the brownies to cool for 15-20 minutes before serving.
