Ingredients
- 8 tablespoons butter divided
- 12 cups mini marshmallows divided
- 8 cups rice cereal divided
- 16 ounces white frosting
- Blue and red food coloring
- red, white, and blue sprinkles
Instructions
- Spray two 9 x 13-inch baking dishes with nonstick spray.
- Place half the marshmallows and half the butter in a large microwave-safe bowl.
- Microwave one bowl in 30 second increments, stirring after each, until the marshmallows and butter are melted. Mix so the ingredients are combined.
- Add the red food coloring to the bowl and mix till you get the desired color.
- Add half the cereal to the bowl. Fold the cereal into the colored marshmallow mix. Continue folding until thoroughly combined.
- Spray your hands with cooking spray, then spread and press the cereal mixture into one of the prepared baking dishes. Press down evenly to cover the entire pan with an even layer. Top with sprinkles.
- Repeat steps 2 through 6 with the blue food coloring. Let both baking pans sit for 40 minutes so the treats can set.
- Once they are set, use a 3-inch star-shaped cookie cutter and cut out as many stars as you can from the red and blue Krispies treats.
- Add the frosting to a Ziploc bag and cut a small piece of the end off. Add a small bit of frosting in the middle of the unsprinkled side of one of the treats. Place the unsprinkled side of the other colored star on the frosting to make a little sandwich. Repeat until you have everything put together.
Notes
- Make sure you use fresh marshmallows since old ones don't melt well.
- To get a brighter color, use gel food coloring instead of liquid. It's more concentrated, so you'll get vibrant colors without changing the texture of the marshmallow mixture.
- A little cooking spray on your hands or a spatula will make pressing the mixture into pans much less sticky.
- Dip your cookie cutter in cooking spray between cuts to prevent it from sticking and ensure clean, sharp edges on your stars.
- Cut the treats into squares if you don't have a star cookie cutter.
- You don't have to turn these 4th of July Rice Krispie treats into sandwiches. Just arrange them in an alternating pattern on a platter if you are in a hurry.
