  • 1/4 cup salted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4-5 cups half and half
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 cups grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. In a skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
  2. Add the flour and increase the heat to medium. Whisk together and let cook for 2 minutes, until the flour turns a light golden color.
  3. Slowly pour in the half and half, whisking to combine. Add in the garlic powder and salt.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer and whisk constantly while it heats. Just as it comes to a simmer, add in 1 1/2 cups of grated parmesan cheese and stir to melt.
  5. The sauce will thicken as it continues to simmer and as it stands, so you can add extra half and half or pasta water if you want a thinner sauce, or add extra parmesan cheese if you would like it thicker.
  6. Serve the Alfredo sauce as a dipping sauce, use it as a pizza sauce, or pour it over pasta with freshly grated parmesan cheese and fresh parsley to garnish (optional).
