Instructions

  1. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray and set aside. Cut the bread into approximately 1 inch cubes.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter then add in the sliced apples, cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Sauté the apples for 3-4 minutes and then pour in the maple syrup. Continue to cook until the apples for another 3-4 minutes until they are tender. Remove the skillet from the heat.
  3. In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Add the bread cubes into the bowl and toss them around until they're coated in the custard.
  4. Pour half of the bread mixture into the casserole dish, pressing it into an even layer. Top with half of the sautéed apples. Repeat these steps again with the remaining bread and apples. Use your hands to press everything down making sure it's covered in the custard and there are no dry spots.
  5. Cover the casserole dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate it overnight. In the morning, preheat your oven to 350° F. Top the casserole with chopped pecans and cover it with a piece of foil. Bake covered for 20 minutes then remove the foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes.
  6. Let the casserole sit for 10 minutes before cutting into it. Garnish with powdered sugar and serve with warm maple syrup.
